Shipshewana is a great destination for the family. With lots of shopping to be done, you might forget about all the great activities the town has to offer kids.
That’s why I’ve compiled a list of the top 15 kids’ activities to do in the Shipshewana area.
1. Take a Ride on the Carousel
Way up on the 3rd floor of the Davis Mercantile sits the most beautiful hand-painted carousel you’ve ever seen. With beautifully designed horses and other intricate farm animals, this working carousel is sure to please kids of all ages.
2. Make a Custom Doll
Kids Kreations is a town-wide treasure. Walk in and you’ll be stepping into a little girls’ dream. This build-a-doll store lets you customize your child’s 18” doll however they choose.
3. Eat a Jo Jo’s pretzel
One of my personal favorites is sitting down and enjoying a warm, fresh-out-of-the-oven JoJo’s pretzel with a freshly made Vanilla Coke.
4. Play at the Ligonier Splash Pad
A 20 minute drive straight south will bring you into the historic town of Ligonier. Take your kids to the splash pad on a hot sunny day. With lots of water fun and a park on the same grounds, it’s a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon.
5. Take a Buggy Ride
It wouldn’t be a trip to Shipshewana without a good old fashion buggy ride. There are lots of different companies that offer this service, so grab your kids, grab your sunglasses and enjoy the ride!

6. Visit Aunt Millie’s Candy Store
Got a sweet tooth? Enjoy a stop at Aunt Millie’s Candy Store. Located on the 3rd floor of the Davis Mercantile, you’ll find lots of different and unusual goodies and candies for everybody’s taste.
7. Shop Red Wagon Toy Store
While you’re at Aunt Millie’s grabbing some candy, take a stroll down to the Red Wagon toy store. You’ll find an incredible line of Melissa & Doug, Thomas the Tank Engine and everything from puppets to puzzles. Don't forget to take a picture with the fun character cut outs!
8. Get Lost at Shipshewana Corn Maze
If you’re in the area any weekend from Labor Day to the end of October, Friday and Saturday nights are Shipshewana Corn Maze nights. With lots of different activities like barrel rides, corn cannons, campfires and the maze, there’s something for everybody.
9. Watch a Parade at Mayfest
A town tradition the first weekend of May is Mayfest. This annual festival includes games, food, entertainment and a parade that literally stops the whole town!
10. Fly a Kite during Kite Komotion
Enjoy the windy days of April with a festival of kites. Grab a blanket and a lawn chair and take part in this kite-watching event on the grounds of Menno-Hof, just on the South side of town.
11. Eat Ice Cream at Fireside Café
Time to take a break? Enjoy a hand-dipped cone and slice of fudge at Fireside Café. They have lots of ice cream flavors to choose from, so sit, relax and enjoy the atmosphere Fireside Café has to offer!
12. Find an Instrument at Simple Sounds
Simple Sounds, an unusual music store- also dubbed “The World’s Finest Dulcimer Shoppe” has unique finds and novelty treasures. Walk away with a banjo, dulcimer, guitar, or kazoo. Kids will enjoy the variety of gifts, instruments and uniqueness the store has to offer.
13. Go Girly at Lotions and Potions
Lotions and Potions is a girly-girls must-stop. Find bubbly bath accessories and customizable scents from perfumes to lotions. Need a little sparkle? You can even add some sparkle to your customized lotions!
14. Maple Lane Animal Farm
Take a tour at one of our “Amish zoos” such as the Maple Lane Wildlife Farm in Topeka. Open from Memorial Day until the end of September, this animal experience has lots of exotic wildlife and petting zoo opportunities to offer.
15. Topeka 4th of July
If you happen to be in town over the 4th of July holiday, Topeka hosts an all-day Independence Day celebration. Food, family and entertainment are the central focus of this annual festival. With classic activities such as big wheel races for the kids, a parade and live entertainment as well as the don’t-miss buggy pull races (a town favorite) you’re sure to have a great time all day. Unwind at sunset under a snuggly blanket with a beautiful fireworks display that lights up the sky.
